Climate review November 2011
The Long Dry Season has started mid
August and it will last till the beginning of December. The average
precipitation for the long dry season is less than 200 mm a month. Furthermore,
the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is at the north of Suriname during
this period and the prevailing wind is the south east trade winds.
The following tables display the monthly
precipitation for November 2011 for the several stations in Suriname. In
addition, the long term monthly rainfall average is also displayed in order to
compare it with the present data. Furthermore, the stations are grouped in the
coastal zone and the interior.
The coast
Table 1 gives an overview of the different stations which
are located in the coastal area, the measured monthly rainfall and the long
term monthly average for November 2011. The rainfall distribution for the coast
is displayed in figure 1.

Figure 4: The interior November 2011
Number of rain days RR >=3.0 mm
The stations Donderskamp, Godoholo and Washabo have noted
the highest number of rain days (11) with more or equal to 3.0mm rainfall for
one day. A maximum daily precipitation of 60.5mm is recorded at Botopasie.
The
general review
The coastal zone and the inland
country have recorded monthly area rainfall averages of 184.9 mm and 71.2 mm. The
coastal zone monthly average is higher than the long term monthly coastal zone
average (110.7 mm) and on the other hand, the interior area average is below
the long term monthly interior average (85.4 mm).
A maximum monthly sum is measured
at Domburg (266.3 mm). The highest number of rain
days for November with daily rainfall equal or greater than 3.0 mm is 19 days.
Furthermore, a maximum daily rainfall has been recorded at Lelydorp
(77.1 mm) and at Botopasi (60.5 mm).
The overall rainfall average for Suriname (the coast
and the inland) is 118.0 mm and this amount is higher than the long term November
rainfall average (98.1mm). The coastal area is relative wet in comparison with
the inland. Even though, the above mentioned values are all below the stated
200mm rainfall, conclusion is drawn that November is relative wet.
